Shelburne is a recreation enthusiast's dream, and outdoor activity is our specialty.
The town boasts one of the world's truly great natural deepwater harbours, affording some of the best sailing available for both yachts and dinghies. Winds are consistent and the harbour provides flat water sailing in the protected harbour, as well as strong winds and choppy, big-sea sailing closer to the harbour mouth.
The Shelburne Harbour Yacht Club provides a variety of year-round activities for members and their guests. The club features wrap-around balconies overlooking the majestic harbour. Shelburne is a first-call port for many cruisers traveling from the Eastern U.S. and from other Canadian ports and several weekly boat races, regattas, club barbeques, the "Parade of Lights" and other activities are highlights of the season. SHYC is also the home of the East Coast Albacore Championships and a large fleet of Albacore dinghies.
The public Shelburne Marina sports boat launches, fuel and other services and it supports other water sports such as windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking and fishing.
Numerous uncrowded white sand beaches in the area are perfect for picnics, sunbathing, playing in the warmer freshwater channels crossing the beach or listening to the surf in quiet solitude.
Nearby, nature preserves and Important Birding Areas are a birder's paradise. Nature trails, town parks and an eminently walkable town centre encourage strolling, hiking and biking. Islands Provincial Park across the harbour offers camping, hiking and great views.
The nearby River Hills Golf & Country Club provides 18 holes of golf with great views and a driving range on the outskirts of town will also please the serious golfer. For the young (and young-at-heart) there is Goofy Golf in Sandy Point. Ball fields, tennis courts, soccer pitches and basketball courts provide venues for spontaneous and organized games for all ages.
Indoor facilities include a bowling alley, curling club and hockey arena, gymnasiums and fitness clubs. More than 100 other clubs and organizations provide various forms of recreational activities.
